Single Vehicle Crash Sends High School Students to Hospital

On Wednesday, October 19, a single vehicle crash sent high school students to hospital.

According to Frederick County Sheriff’s Office the crash happened shortly before 7.30 a.m. on Hollow Road north of Layla Drive in Frederickstown, when a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by 17 year old Austin E. Atherton failed to negotiate a right curve and went off the road. The Jeep then hit a culvert and overturned.

Atherton was ejected and flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore to be treated for serious injuries, and is said to be in stable condition. Two of his passengers, 15 year old Nathan T. Fredericks and 16 year old Tyler M. Ferris were treated at Meritus Medical Center and released.

All of those involved were students at Middletown High School.

According to police, the reason for the crash was excessive speed.
